        At first these fitted kind of awkwardly but after two wearings it fit extremely well. I use them primarily for cycling in winter, about 1-10C. The insulation is decent and reasonably wind proof even when I'm cycling pretty fast. I don't think its water proof but i did wear it through a light drizzle once and it did actually keep my head and face pretty dry. The multiple wear options is a major plus and its very practical.

          I wear this while commuting by bicycle during the winter and it works great. Keeps my face and ears warm and solves the problem of breathing in freezing cold air.

          Because it's so thin and light weight it easily fits underneath a bicycle helmet.

          I've had no problem with its wind-resistant properties.

            I originally got the Ninjaclava as a joke, thinking its got an awesome name, why not try it? But then, I wore it when i went sledding with my younger cousins, and it eliminated the need for a hat, and kept the snow out of my neck, a bonus. I like the fact that you can bend it down over your neck to expose your entire face, which makes it possible for it to stay on all day, because of all the different ventilation options.

            I have owned the ninjaclava for over a year and used it on many backpacking trips. What's good - The way the ninjaclava opens and stretches to accomodate many ways to wear it. it is comfortable to wear, not at all bulky or constrictive. i have slept in it a few times. and it did not bother me at all. I think it best use is for sleeping.
            What not so good - it really isn't that warm or wind resistant. I think of it more as a baselayer for my head. it provides a little warmth, but not enough for me to justify the weight. There are other balaclavas that are wind resistant and warmer, and i can say that this has its place, but i think that in the temps that this piece is effective, I'd prefer a decent beanie.

              Q:

              I'm looking for a balaclava to wear nordic skiing, not so much for the cold but to keep the sun off my face, neck and ears. But I need to breathe! (Nordic skiing is highly aerobic). How would this or another balaclava perform?

                Thank you for your question. For the activity you are describing, this Ninjaclava would be a perfect option. It is made of a lighter, more breathable fleece which will be great protection for your face, neck and ears when you need it. The ability to pull the face cover down give the balaclava more versatility for the more aerobic activities, allowing you to breathe and release some of the warmth built up in your head.               1. When wearing typical goggles with the Ninjaclava, is there a gap on the outside of either eye where skin is exposed to the wind? This a common and serious deficiency of balaclavas.
              2. Is the fit over the nose tight (and therefore, uncomfortable) for any but those with the smallest schnozzes? Another common failing of balaclavas.
              3. Is the Ninjaclava made of wind-proof material like Gore Windstopper or the equivalent? I don't see why anyone would want a balaclava that was not windproof, most of the time.
              4. Given that the bulk of the balaclava should be windproof, is there a non-windproof part (ideally an opening) where the user's mouth is, so the user can easily breathe? And talk, and drink? Another area where most balaclavas fail.
              5. Finally, does it come in sizes such that one can get a good fit in general over the face? A poorly-fitting balaclava is uncomfortable or of little use, yet most are 'one size fits all' which really means 'one size fits few'.

                Thanks for your question. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. Based on your specific questions which I have answered below, I'd recommend one of our more technical balaclavas: the Sonic Balaclava, the Baffin Balaclava, or the Gorilla Balaclava for your requirements instead of the Ninjaclava. They have windproof materials with openings so you can talk and drink and have the widest range of sizes so you can get the best fit.

                Here are the specific answers to your questions:

                1. Yes. In fact, you have less of a gap with a balaclava with a more round face opening like the Wind Pro Balaclava or the Option Balaclava.

                2. I did not find the fit over my average-sized schnoz to be uncomfortably tight. This area needs to be somewhat snug or air will leak past this seam and either allow cold air in or cause your breath to fog up your goggles.

                3. The Ninjaclava is not made of a windproof material. Some people are using their balaclava for a more aerobic activity and need a more breathable material throughout their balaclava and this balaclava was designed for that user. We do make a number of windproof balaclavas.

                4. There is a non-windproof material over the user's mouth of the Ninjaclava.

                5. The Ninjaclava is made in two sizes, Small/Medium and Large/XL.

              I'm right on the boundary between a S/M and a L/XL - any suggestions on whether to order big or small? Will this shrink a little in the wash? Will it stretch out enough if i order small?

                Thanks for your question, the fabric in the Ninjaclava is very stretchy so being on the boarder the S/M would be a better fit. The fabric does not shrink when washed so the smaller size would be better.
