Are the shells for these gloves lined/insulated at all, or does all the warmth come from the liners with the shell providing wind/water/abrasion resistance and tactile feel? Could the shells be worn without the liners on "cold, but not bitterly cold" days?

  Yes, the shell does have 170g of insulation on the back of hand along moonpile fleece on the palm. This is separate from the liners insulation. The shell can be worn by itself and provide some warmth allowing the glove to be more modular and address a wider temperature range.

  The Firebrand Glove is a two piece glove (shell & liner). Both pieces are insulated. The shell is lightly insulated and will provide warmth down to approximately 20/30 degrees F. The liner adds considerably more insulation and drops the comfort range down to -5/5 degrees F. The shells may be worn without the liners on cold days (and are designed be worn in conjunction with a wide variety of liner or work gloves), but even when worn alone don't provide a high level of dexterity or tactility as the fingers are roomy to accommodate the thickness of the liners.

  The Firebrand Gloves are rated down to -20F. This will vary slightly depending on the individual. Yes, they have a removable 170g EnduraLoft liner.

Q:
I am looking for an extreme cold weather glove to use while flying. Picture lots of wind and low temperatures for extended periods of time. Dexterity is a priority, would these gloves be the right choice?

  The Firebrand Gloves offer extreme warmth and waterproofing but lack dexterity for small instrument manipulation. I recommend the Swoop Mitt Shell and Swoop Mitt Liner as a system for aviators. The Swoop Mitt Liner is a cold weather FR glove with excellent dexterity and moderate warmth. The Swoop Mitt Shell offers good insulation and the on the fly ability to push you hand through and have high tactility.

  As these are products manufactured for the military. I would guess they are NIR compliant. Thus if you want to keep this feature wash with the "Sportswash" brand. As Sportswash (or smiliar high end deterent) do not contain optical brighteners. I recommend Sportswash as they are very clear on the label that it does not contain these brighteners but there are probably other brands also that does this.
